Christmas gifts for building fans: why Nifeliz became a favourite in our home

Brick-built sports car, camera and flowers displayed in a warm living room, with model parts and instructions on a table.

My partner has built three Nifeliz cars in two years, and they now take pride of place in our living room. Here’s our experience and what to consider when choosing a building set as a Christmas gift.

Buying a building set for someone who loves LEGO can feel surprisingly risky when you’re considering another brand.

Will they enjoy it? Will the quality disappoint? Will the finished model look as good as it does in the photographs?

I had those questions too. But after introducing my partner to Nifeliz, we now have three completed Nifeliz cars taking pride of place on shelves in our living room.

He’s built them over the past two years and really enjoyed the process. From our experience, the quality has been very good and the finished cars have earned their place on display.

A surprise he wasn’t expecting

We’d agreed not to buy Christmas presents for each other so we could spend more on the children. But I pulled a fast one and bought him a Nifeliz model as a gift from the kids.

His reaction was almost tearful. I think he thought it had cost more than it did, the packaging certainly made an impression, but what stayed with me was how much the surprise meant to him.

It’s the thought that counts, and this felt like something chosen just for him.

The enjoyment lasted beyond opening the box, too. He had a project to get stuck into, the satisfaction of seeing it come together and a finished model he was proud to display. He even made a video, shared it on social media and tagged Nifeliz, so I think it’s fair to say the gift went down well!

Three Nifeliz cars over the past two years later, I’d say that first surprise was a success.

The packaging made a good first impression

The Nifeliz boxes we received looked expensive and felt well presented as gifts.

That matters when you’re choosing a brand you’re less familiar with. I wanted the present to feel considered when it was opened, rather than like a compromise.

A detail I particularly liked was the small sorting trays supplied with the sets we bought. You assemble the trays and use them to hold parts from a pack while working through the build.

It’s a simple idea, but it helps keep the pieces organised rather than spread across the table.

These are observations from the sets we’ve bought, so check what’s included with the particular model you’re considering.

Would a LEGO alternative suit the person you’re buying for?

My partner was open to trying something different, and Nifeliz has become a favourite in our home.

But that doesn’t mean every LEGO fan will want another brand.

Some people collect specific LEGO themes or sets. Others enjoy building more broadly and are happy to explore different makers.

Before buying, try asking:

  • Have you built anything from another brand?
  • Is there a particular model you would like?
  • Do you prefer vehicles, buildings or decorative models?
  • Do you enjoy following a detailed build, or making your own designs?

A little curiosity can tell you whether an alternative would be welcome.

Choose the subject as carefully as the brand

The cars were a good fit for my partner, but the right building set doesn’t have to be a vehicle.

This Christmas, the children are getting flower and camera model sets. I like being able to choose different subjects rather than buying everyone a similar project.

Think about what would make the recipient interested in opening the box and starting.

Do they enjoy cars, photography or flowers? Would they prefer a model connected to an existing interest, or something decorative they can put on a shelf?

The subject gives the build a personal connection.

Think about where the finished model will live

Our three cars are displayed in the living room, which gives us the pleasure of seeing them after the building is finished.

Before buying a large set, check the completed dimensions and think about the recipient’s available space.

A model can look reasonably compact in a product photograph and still need a substantial shelf.

If they already have several builds on display or boxes waiting to be started - a smaller project may be more practical.

Match the build to their experience

A large piece count doesn’t automatically make a better gift.

Some people enjoy a detailed project spread across several sessions. Others prefer something they can complete in an evening.

Read the age guidance and product description for the exact set. For children, choose according to their experience and the support they may need, rather than the subject alone.

If compatibility with existing pieces matters, check that too. Don’t assume every building brand uses the same sizes or connections.

What to check before ordering

Our experience has been positive, but I would still check each listing carefully.

Confirm the exact model, what’s included, the finished size and the total cost with delivery. Look at the retailer’s returns information and how missing or damaged parts are handled.

Keep the recipient’s preferences in mind throughout. A well-chosen smaller model can be more enjoyable than an impressive box that doesn’t interest them.

A personal recommendation, based on our builds

I’m pleased I encouraged my partner to try Nifeliz. Three cars and two years later, the enjoyment he’s had from building them and the fact that they’re proudly displayed in our home makes them memorable gifts for me too.

If someone you buy for enjoys building and is open to another brand, Nifeliz could be worth exploring.

Add their favourite subjects, preferred brands and display preferences to their Givumi profile. Those details can help you find a project that feels chosen for them, rather than simply another box of pieces.
